Breast Reconstruction using the Lattissimus Dorsi Back Flap .

Breast Reconstruction using the Lattissimus Dorsi Muscle and skin off the back is a 4 hour procedure.

The Muscle and skin are passed through a tunnel under the arm to rebuild the skin envelope of the breast.

If there is enough muscle and fat a small to modest breast can be built.

If not an implant is placed behind the muscle to increase the volume of the breast reconstruction.

Most patients stay in hospital for 4 days and a drain is left inside for this time.

Recover at home is usually 6 weeks.

There are risks including Skin necrosis, scarring , numbness and pain

Rarely there is weakness of the shoulder and muscle power of the arm.

The muscle can twitch  and sometimes pain is felt in the back area from where the muscle was taken.
